“There is a story about an old fisherman and an old man who was hungry.  The hungry man needed a fish, but rather than give him a fish and be done with it, the fisherman taught him to fish, so he could always find his own food.  First Place is kind of like that – parents learn to be stable and on their own, learn to advocate for themselves and their children, to eventually meet their own needs.  When people have the option to do for themselves, they begin to feel so much better about themselves.  That is giving families dignity.

Regina Owens, grandparent of three First Place students, who lost their mother, Tifanny.   Excerpted from the February 2008 issue of Seattle’s Child Magazine

Please help us continue to write “A New Story” for Regina, her grandchildren, and all of the First Place families.

First Place provides education, nurturing and advocacy for children whose families struggle with the risk or reality of homelessness.

Basic needs are met in a safe environment, so that children and their families can begin to tackle the challenges resulting from the trauma of homelessness.  First Place cares for the entire family, understanding that a child’s future must be supported at home, and that emotional wounds heal slowly.

We are dedicated to empowering parents to better support their children by achieving employment stability and finding permanent housing.
