After School Art and Tutoring Program
Purpose
The after school program for First Place provides students K-6 an opportunity to improve academically and culturally by working on their Individual Education Plans (IEP). It also provides quality time for students to receive instruction in the visual/performing arts.
Goals
- To provide students with an opportunity to receive help with homework and enrichment activities to enhance their academic performance as well as reinforcement of basic skills in mathematics and reading.
- To provide students with learning in the arts, such as choral, visual art and music, that encourage healthy expression and creative thought, as well as build confidence.

Tutoring
Community Provider: Knowledge Points
Grade Level: 1-5
Knowledge Points tutoring program offers proven and guaranteed tutoring programs in Reading, Writing, Math and Study Skills for grades 1-5 here at First Place School. Tutors are committed to working with parents, classroom teachers, and students to ensure success. With regular testing, evaluation, and a customized curriculum for each student, this tutoring program helps students improve their academic performance so that they can achieve at their grade level. Knowledge Points also helps students build skills and gain the confidence they need to succeed.
Homework Help
Community Provider: First Place Volunteers
Grade Level: K-6
First Place volunteers provide help with homework to those
students here at First Place School that are achieving at
grade level and need some extra help with daily homework
assignments. This is also an opportunity for students to
build healthy relationships with volunteers and improve
their social interactions with adults. Volunteers gain
experience mentoring students in an academic setting.
Art Program

Visual Art
Community Provider: Art with Heart
Grade Level: K-3
Art with Heart is a 501c3 nonprofit whose mission is to
empower youth in crisis through therapeutic art and programs
that foster self-expression. We provide non-traditional
critical mental health support to youth who are facing
trauma, illness, familial dysfunction or homelessness. Our
workshops give kids a way to express both their suffering
and strength, allowing them to successfully deal with
intense emotions.
Instrumental Music
Community Provider: University of Washington
Grade Level: 4-6
Nse Ekpo, doctoral music student at the University of
Washington teaches instrumental music to First Place 4th,
5th and 6th graders. Students gather to form a concert band
once a week and also practice in small groups with private
instructors one a week. First Place music students will
perform at an annual First Place fundraiser, which will
serve as their spring concert.
Choir
Community Provider: First Place Volunteers
Grade Level: K-3
First Place volunteers, Taylor Gearheart and Miriam Aflakian
work with students at First Place that are interested in
learning creative skills and techniques to help them express
themselves through song. Students practice weekly with their
choir and will perform at the end of the school year for
family and friends.
